Purifying and moisturising clay face mask


Detox is a word that you hear everywhere in January.  Undoubtedly feeding and nourishing the body from the inside out is the best way to keep your skin glowing and healthy, but if you are sick of reading about juice cleanses and detox food recipes, here is one with a twist –a nourishing, natural and organic recipe for your face!

Detoxing face masks help to remove impurities from the top layer of your skin by ridding it of toxins and boosting cell renewal.  Clay offers a fantastic deep cleanse by absorbing excess oils and physically drawing out dirt from the top layers of the epidermis.  Face masks can also help to boost circulation, unblock pores, even skin tone and shed dead skin cells, all of which helps all your other face products to work more effectively.

It is important to use a face mask which suits your own skin type. Normal, dry, oily, and combination skin all have different needs which should to be nourished with different ingredients and formulations.  I made this face mask suitable for my own skin type which is Normal – Dry.  If you would like to see a face mask for a different skin type, just leave a comment or send me an email.  The wonderful thing about making your own skincare is that once you are familiar with the basic processes and base recipes which create face and body care products, you can adapt and modify these endlessly to suit a particular skin type, problem area or even just a fragrance preference.  The combinations and adaptations can be as creative and flexible as cooking food in the kitchen and that is why I love it!

The creativity bonus aside, the main reason why I began making some of my own skincare products is to avoid using mass produced products full of harmful chemicals and skin irritants.  I like my skincare how I like my food, in as far as possible to be fresh, organic, natural, functional and free from added chemicals and preservatives.  Your skin absorbs everything you put on to it, including anything nasty in your skincare products.   Another benefit of making your own products is that you can make small, fresh batches and tailor the ingredients in each batch if your skin has changed due to a spot breakout or hormonal issues.  Cost wise, while there is an initial cost to purchase the raw ingredients up front, these generally have a long shelf life and the quantities needed in most recipes are very small.  There is no price mark up for packaging, branding, marketing etc of your final product.  The products you make are produced at cost price and your investment is definitely returned to you –in money saved, satisfaction gained, creativity flexed, health protected and peace of mind engaged!

I chose the ingredients in this mask to suit normal to dry skin.  Remember that the quantity and type of ingredients can be adapted endlessly. There are several types of clays and waters which you could use, and endless types of oils and essential oils, all with different properties and benefits. Clays are very rich in skin nourishing minerals.  Pink and white clay are best for normal, combination, dry and sensitive skins, as green clay tends to be very tight and drying on these complexions.  Dead Sea Mud improves circulation, deep cleanses and detoxifies.  Aloe vera is fantastically soothing and hydrating to skin which is why I have added it, but you could also just use plain filtered water.  Avocado oil is rich in vitamins A, B1, B2, B5, D and E.  It encourages skin cell regeneration and healing.  Between them, Ylang Ylang, Neroli and Sandalwood essential oils will stimulate, smooth, moisturise, encourage new cell growth, balance oil production and unclog pores, as well as adding a wonderfully relaxing aroma! This recipe makes 3-4 applications and the mask will keep for two weeks, extended slightly if kept in the fridge in an air tight container.  It is possible to include some preservatives to extend the shelf life, but I prefer to keep them as natural as possible and make small, fresh batches.

Remember that due to the highly effective work of face masks, your skin can sometimes briefly look worse afterwards as any congested toxins and impurities can be brought to the surface.  This will usually be reduced if you use a face mask regularly, but it is best to avoid using a mask for a couple of days before a big event just in case your skin decides to erupt!  Apply this mask to clean, dry skin, in a medium, even layer, avoiding the eyes and lips.  Allow it to remain on the face for fifteen to twenty minutes and then remove thoroughly with warm water, exfoliating a little as you go.  Moisturise afterwards and drink a glass of water to help with the skin detox process. This mask will leave you looking radiant, glowing and healthy –even if you don’t yet feel like that on the inside after all of the December indulgence!


  • 7 1/2 tsp pink clay
  • 5 tsp white clay
  • 1 heaped tsp dead sea mud
  • 2 tbsp aloe vera water
  • 1/2 tsp avocado oil
  • 3 drops ylang ylang essential oil
  • 3 drops sandalwood essential oil
  • 3 drops neroli essential oil

Put the aloe vera water in to a bowl.  Sprinkle the clay and dead sea mud in to the water and leave for two minutes.  Once the powders have started to be absorbed in to the water, stir gently until thoroughly mixed.  Make sure to break up any lumps of clay.  Add the avocado oil and essential oils and stir again.  If you are not happy with the consistency of the mixture, you can add more water to make it looser, or more clay to make it firmer.  It should be soft enough to spread on your face, but thick enough to hold it’s shape.
